Triple Loop Leadership Approach

CCD uses a leadership framework entitled Triple Loop Leadership birthed from research in the 1970s that examined how organizations learn. Using that research as a foundation, we have developed a model that engages leaders to learn how to learn by recalling how they’ve learned in the first place. This deeper level of learning embraces a transformative approach where leaders not only adapt their strategies and challenge their assumptions but also critically evaluate and change their guiding principles.

Becoming a triple loop leader involves developing a deep, reflective approach to leadership that goes beyond traditional methods. This concept is rooted in the idea of "triple loop learning," a framework that extends single and double loop learning theories.

Triple Loop Leadership

  • Cultivate Deep Self-Reflection

Regularly engage in introspection to understand your own beliefs, values, and the assumptions that underpin your leadership style. Reflect on how your experiences shape your decisions and leadership approach.

  • Foster Openness and Vulnerability

Create an environment where feedback is valued, and vulnerability is seen as a strength. This means being open to feedback, admitting mistakes, and showing that you don't have all the answers.

  • Encourage Continuous Learning and Adaptability

Embrace a mindset of lifelong learning, both for yourself and within your organization. Encourage questioning of the status quo and support initiatives that challenge existing assumptions and practices.

  • Lead by Example

Demonstrate through your actions the principles of triple loop learning. Show how you are willing to change not just strategies and assumptions, but also the foundational beliefs and values that guide your leadership.

Cultivate Deep Self-Reflection allows leaders to examine their values and biases, reflect on their actions and decisions, and seek growth through reflecting and practice. This is the foundation of personal development and authentic leadership. Foster Openness and Vulnerability encourages open communication, welcomes challenges to the status quo, and values diverse perspectives. This step ensures that learning and leadership are inclusive and comprehensive. Encourage Continuous Learning and Adaptability is being open to feedback, admitting mistakes, and using them as stepping stones for deeper learning and improvement. Recognizing your vulnerabilities allows for genuine growth and development. Lead by Example takes action that leads to positive change and focus on long-term goals rather than short-term fixes. This step is about putting learning into practice and leading with a vision for sustainable progress.
